Fake Democracy, Rich Democrats

Fake democrats produce a fake democracy. This is what our westernized Pakistani elite and some of the self-styled ‘liberals’ in our media don’t understand. A Parliament filled with feudal lords who rape the women of the peasants on their lands and operate secret prisons, and then come to the Parliament in expensive shiny cars and jewelry thanks to political parties where another set of feudals run them as family grocery shops—this is no democracy. I prefer a centralized system of governance led by technocrats committed to economic and political reform ruling for 5-10 years, implementing a plan backed by the Pakistani military in the background.

Here’s how our democrats and ‘workers’ of democracy filed their statement of assets recently. This information was compiled by the Center for Research and Security Studies in Islamabad. It shows our democrats, all of them, not only lying to the Election Commission about how much money they have but also confident that an important law that punishes the liars will never be implemented.

REPORT: An overwhelming majority of [Pakistanis is] not prepared to accept that the Prime Minister of Pakistan does not own a home or a plot of land; has no vehicle and has a total bank balance of just Rs. 979,734 ($12,246).

Even more unbelievable are statements submitted by Pakistan’s religious leaders including Maulana Fazlur Rahman and his confidants, Maulvi Agha Muhammad and Abdul Ghafoor Haidri, Secretary General of Jamiat-e-Ulma-e-Islam (F). Maulana Fazlur Rahman owns a house, domestic furniture worth Rs.50,000 but does not have any inherited property or vehicle and a mere Rs. 3,000 in his bank account. Total assets declared by Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri are valued at Rs. 650,000 ($8,125). JUI-F’s Senator Maulana Gul Naseeb’s declared assets stand at Rs. 30,000 only. Maulvi Agha Muhammad declared that he only has Rs. 1,500 ($18.75) in his bank accounts.

The total value of assets declared by Mushahid Hussain Syed, PML(Q)’s Secretary General, stand at Rs. 35,000 ($437). Former Chief Minister, Punjab, and former Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly, Chaudhry Pervez Ilahi, does not have a car and he has a total of 78 acres of land.

Dr Ayatullah Durrani, PPP’s Minister of State for Industries and Production, has no assets (he has mentioned that he operates two bank accounts but failed to declare the balances held in those accounts). Durrani also mentions that he shares the agricultural land with his family and has “no other source of income.”
Another legislator of PPP, Jamshed Ahmed Dasti, said that he had no assets or property and operated just one bank account to draw his salary as a parliamentarian. Federal Minister for Water and Power, Raja Pervez Ashraf, valued his personal luxury vehicles at Rs. 1.5 million.

Pakistan Muslim League-N’s MNA, Rana Abdul Sattar, submitted a blank statement and he does not own any property, vehicle, business or any personal belongings. Ms. Reena Kumari, MNA, Pakistan Muslim League-Functional, just signed the statement but did not mention the details of any of her assets.

Some legislators even claimed that they did not own any property or many of their multi-million rupee properties were gifted to them by “unknown sources.”

The Most Interesting Asset’s Declaration: Notably, most interesting of all the statements came from Hamza Shahbaz, son of Mian Shahbaz Sharif, President, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz. Hamaza Shahbaz’s statement depicts an asset base in the amount of Rs. 210 million and an equivalent amount of liabilities. His wife, Mehrunnisa Hamza, has jewelry worth Rs. 2.5 million and an equivalent amount in liabilities.

Pakistani lawmakers have not done any service to their country, democracy or the people of Pakistan. Pakistani parliamentarians need to set examples that ordinary Pakistanis can follow, admire and implement on themselves. If at all the governing elite wants to bring in the culture of rule of law, of which much is talked about, then all of this must begin at home. Personal accountability must become the first step toward a culture of good governance, and transparency before the people of Pakistan.

  1. So Hamza Sharif beat them all with Rs 210 million. The statement from Maulana Fazlurrehman is the most hilarious one. By reading all the above statements one things that comes in my mind are that our politicians are very poor and they ALL belong to lower-middle class. What a pity! The rich in our nation should come and help them out :D

All parties who take part in the democratic system are run on democratic principles where candidates are awarded party tickets on the whims of leaders. Unless the parties reform themselves a full fledged democracy can not take its true form.

  5. To get Pakistan out of this current mess, we need a replacement of current corrupt government with a government formed by selecting well-reputed technocrats of Pakistan. This selection process should be done by the Pakistan Army or under her protection. This view is shared by Ahmed Quraishi, Zaid Hamid and many other faithful Pakistanis.

All the readers of this article, Please join me in spreading this message for the sake of our beloved Pakistan. The success of military intervention to install a government of technocrats SOLELY depends on how much our public is ready for that.

I have created a yahoo group: save our beloved pakistan(http://groups.yahoo.com/group/save_our_beloved_pakistan/?yguid=63739740)

I want the membership to be in 100,000s. Members will recruit more members to this point of view. We are only tasked to win minds. We don't need to lead any processions or get beaten by the police.

Once our target is convinced that Pakistan does not need democracy at this time, then we have attained our goals. We can also use this group to pressure the government to retreat from the wrong decisions. We can flood them with emails, phone calls, letters. The more we are, the more pressure we can exert.

  6. the moment our media starts showing patriotism & engaging think tanks & analysts of USA & UK to talk with our analysts like AQ & ZH then it can be said yes Pakistani Media is showing some right direction...its no use of talking when they can't hear ur logical viewpoint.

  7. I highly respect Mr Ahmed's view about our current politicians. We cannot expect anything good from the current ruler's.Current leadership is an example of shear incompetence and failure.

But I want Mr Ahmed Quraishi to also unveil all the corruption in the army committed by our great Generals. Our politicians face more criticism as compared to the leader's of the armed forces.

This should end now and all those reponsible for destroying Pakistan whether civilian or military should be apprehended and brought to justice. New leadership must emerge but democracy must prevail and the army should be allowed to intervene at any cost.
We have seen that even the supreme power of our army generals Ayb, Yahya, Zia and Musharraf could not deliver well for the country.
Civilian governements of PPP and PML-N have also miserably failed.
Mushrraf's agenda of being an ally on the war of terror has backfired and its now inevitable for Pakistan to get rid of this war as soon as possible

I hope the nation will stand up and and unite against all the forces that are destabilizing and harming Pakistan both domestically and internationally.
    May ALLAH bless Pakistan

  8. indian tv channels engage international media through panel discussions this way the civil society, writers, journalists, anchors of USA accept & listen to what indians are saying.....this is how you project yourself internationally....but our slutty media just brings losers from all political parties & they start fighting...hence promoting hatred & favoritism to either one...so the end result would be confused, intolerant Pakistani's....

  9. Ah! My family holds assets worth more than these politicians!!! My God! I can't forgive myself enough for CURSING them for their crimes. My Lord! They turned out to be pathetic than most of us.... So thats why Pakistan needs so much foreign aids. We need a break...No we should give these poor people a BREAK and let them plunder more of our country's wealth. Ah! I can't even laugh enough.

  10. Bang on Ahmed. I think ours is a total sham democracy in which only the rich or the influential (including those of religious parties) can afford to run for office. Seems to me that "you scratch my back and I scratch your back system is in place" no matter which party is in power. What amuses me is the Muslim league divided into several groups affixed letter like Q, N, X, Y, Z!!! I heard some who were appointed in PIA during PPP's last tenure, were fired by PML but Zardari restored them with (ready?) back pay!!!! Even Eidhi tried to get involved in the political process, but when he saw the dirt and the muck, he thought it best to stay away.

We need a change with sincere people running for office. No iff's and no butt's.

  12. I second Mohammed Zafar's opinion about telling us which generals are corrupt or what corruptions some army generals are involved.

I also want Ahmed to honestly constructively criticise wrong actions of Musharraf. He has expressed displeasure against some of the stuff Musharraf did which is good but he needs to disclose any Musharraf's involvement in corruption barring his imposition of martial law and Chief Justice thing.

  13. Hey listen you guys, take no prisoners!!! All corrupt officials, whether civilian or military (ex or current), must be exposed.

Musharraf may have made some errors of judgement, but no one can accuse him of looting the treasury or taking bribes. In fact Mush facilitated free and fair elections; The reserves during his tenure rose to $17b and he also gave us a free press. Considering these achievement, we may cut the guy some slack. No one is perfect, remember. As for his involvement after 911 in war against terror, remember it was that OR the risk getting bombed backed to stone age with our infrastructure, industries, dams, etc. destroyed. Guessed who would have celeberated most if that happened?? India, perhaps??!! Besides, Afghanistan was fast becoming a training university for terrorism with students coming to enroll from as far as UK, Canada, Australia (and some even from the US!!!). The Taliban were requested by all to give Osama up for trial, but they refused, so they had to face the music. I saw Osama on video claiming foreknowledge of attacks on the World Towers!! (now, how dumb is that??!!!). This Osama guy is something else. During Afghan War against the soviets, he accepted all kinds of military assistance from the US but as soon as the war was over, he suddenly remembered that the US is the enemy!! Talk about using someone for gain!!

Compared to some of our present collection of politicians, I would take (a new and improved)Mush anytime!!!

  14. I lean towards Musharraf. I believe he was the best of the lot but I don't wanna be a cult-like follower.

Our current system is corrupt and no one is immune from it. I see that one of Musharraf's best friend is Durrani (who he lovingly call MAD) and this guy was working for USA. How can Musharraf be friends with such a guy when he professes he keeps Pakistan's interests first?

Therefore, an honest evaluation by someone who knows more than us laymen is highly needed. After all it is the right of Pakistanis to know how our rulers spent the national exchequer.

  15. Mr Qureshi, your views represent the thinking of establishment and agencies. You prefer a government of technocrats backed by the Pakistani Military instead of democratically elected government. What do you mean by 'backed by the Pakistani Military'? Military's job is to guard the borders of my beloved country. Unfortunately our military failed to do its job and became a parasite for the poor nation. The military has nothing to do with governance. Military is paid to remain faithfully at the command of elected government. A soldier is nothing more than a chowkidar. Now a couple of questions about you:
    (1) Who sponsored you ?
    (2) How you have become an expert for BBC ?

  16. What is so big deal- we are not INDIA is not that much far in this field. We too have a fake democracy and we too have rich democrats. I wish someday you care to do some google work and you will find out that both BJP and CONGRES has criminals , more than half of their lists. And no GARIB candidate please- we have millionaries out there !!

Even LALU YADAV, father of 9 and a primary teacher is husband of uneductaed ex. chief minister and now supports a lavish life style...billionarie !
From where all this money comes ? People of Bihar did not ask him-how can anyone else ??
    @ A. Rehman

I was closing when I read your lines. If you go little back in times- democracy always failed in PAK and it was army under which PAK has 'some peace '

Imay be wrong but let me know. I think gen. Mush was better than N. Sharief.
