The Underdog Sharif

Once Pervez Musharraf, Asif Zardari and Nawaz Sharif were travelling in an auto rickshaw. They met with an accident and all three of them died.

An Angel was waiting for this moment at the doorstep of death.

He asks MUSHARAF and Zardari to go to HEAVEN. But, for Nawaz Sharief, Angel had already decided that he should be sent to HELL.

Nawaz Sharief is not at all happy with this decision. He asks Angel as to why this discrimination is being made. All the three of them had served the public. Similarly, all took bribes, all misused public positions, etc. Then why the differential treatment?

He felt that there should be a formal test or an objective evaluation before a decision is made; and should not be just based on opinion or preconceived notions. Angel agrees to this and asks all the three of them to appear for an English test.

MUSHARAF is asked to spell " PAKISTAN " and he does it correctly. Zardari is asked to spell " ENGLAND " and he too passes. It is Nawaz Sharief's turn and he is asked to spell " CZECHOSLOVAKIA ".

Nawaz Sharief protests that he doesn't know English. He says this is not fair and that he was given a tough question and thus forced to fail with false intent. Angel then agrees to conduct a written test in Urdu (to give another chance assuming that Nawaz Sharief should at least feel that Urdu would provide an equal platform for all three).

MUSHARAF is asked to write "KUTTA BOLA BHOW BHOW". He writes it easily and passes. Zardari is asked to write "BILLY BOLI MYAUN MYAUN". He too passes. Nawaz Sharief is asked to write "BANDAR BOLA GURRRRRR.... ." Tough one. He fails again.

Nawaz Sharief is extremely unhappy. Having been a student of history (which the other two weren't), he now requested for all the 3 to be subjected to a test in history Angel says OK but this would be the last chance and that he would not take any more tests.

MUSHARAF is asked: "When did Pakistan get Independence ?" He replied "1947" and passed. Zardari is asked "How many people died during the independence struggle?". He gets nervous. Angel asked him to choose from 3 options: 100,000 or 200,000 or 300,000. Zardari catches it and says 200,000 and passes. It's Nawaz Sharief's turn now.

Angel asks him to give the Names and Addresses of each one of the 200,000 who died in the Independence struggle. Nawaz Sharief accepts defeat and agrees to go to HELL.

Moral of the story: IF YOUR MANAGEMENT HAS DECIDED TO FRUSTRATE YOU, THERE IS NO ESCAPE!

  4. I heard that in heydays of bombings in Beirut people shared jokes a lot - after all it helped them keep a semblance of sanity and laughter in midst of bombings and ruin.

With this article - you reminded of that - except that this joke, if you call it that, is pretty pedestrian.

Although Ahmed, I have been curious to know about this - your own honest opinion to a hypothetical situation.

In some near future, Nawaz Sharif brings in Sharia over Pakistan - after all he tried that earlier thru the 15th Amendment - and the Qazi courts are run by Taliban dispensing speedy justice. You have a cousin (sister) whom you like much and she has a boyfriend which is quite normal - but assuming this sister is caught walking with her paramour after Taliban takeover and Sharia. And she is about to be caned - what are you going to do - will you accept that this is OK.

Please do not skirt the issue by saying that Taliban is not going to take over Pakistan and there will be no Sharia. In that case - let me say all this is happening now and in SWAT - after all you could have your sister there too.

    Thanks

  5. Bengal Under Attack:

Unfortunately there is not a lot of thinking going on about these things.

A lot of what people take for granted about "Sharia" without regard to "which fiqh" and what school of thought leads to a hazy thinking.

There is also a determined effort to NOT allow discussions to flow along that path. Because it suits the "Salafi" (another name for Wahhabi/Saudi) sect. Where there are positives as well as negatives in Salafism. However there are serious questions to be addressed on this.

But you will not hear it on our media or from our politicians.

Reason being over the last 2 decades Pakistan has gotten increasingly "thullay" to Saudi Arabia thanks to financial bailouts and oil handouts and personal bailouts (Nawaz Sharif !).

But you WILL hear it from some of the more ancient schools of Ulema (those that predate Salafi influence). Problem is most people are so averse to the whole "Ulema" thing - and since it seems like such a complex thing - they usually want to tune it out.

But as responsible citizens they FIRST have to understand what all this is about. In a way this will suit the Ulema's goal i.e. to educate the public about Islamic things - and many people tend to avoid this (for secular reasons, or oddly enough because they don't want to think about these things and want them left to the ulema).

However that is not a reason to avoid examination of these issues. Because sometimes the solution to the current problem is not the apparent one - but the CRUX of it lies in something a few layers back in the analysis.

But people will not have done the analysis, so they remain without tools in a sea of information/misinformation.

    Our media is also culpable.

A few days ago the MQM held an "Ulema gathering" to condemn the recent movements in Swat/Taliban/flogging etc.

Most TV channels showed Altaf Hussain's speech, but then they bailed out. The conferences lasted for much of the day. It was a GOLDEN opportunity to study the attitudes of the varieties of "deeni jamaat" and their ways of tackling the "Salafi" influence.

Given that we hear the Taliban interpretations of things day in and day out, and some TV anchors with similar leanings (Hamid Mir and Ansar Abbasi), this was a RARE occasion where one could hear the nitty gritty complaints of the Ulema against the problems facing Pakistan.

But no channel covered it fully. Even pro-Musharraf channels like TV One and the pro-MQM channel Dhoom TV did not cover it in real time.

I haven't really given an explanation. I guess just pointed to the areas of weakness in the public discourse in Pakistan.

On a slightly unrelated note, I wrote a long reply to a pro-Taliban comment on a youtube page. Since it was getting lengthy I moved the response to the blog page - you may find it interesting:

  7. None of the recognized ALIM attended the Ulema's gathering held by MQM. For Altaf Hussain, Taliban means the poor Pathans of Karachi who together with Punjabis and Sindhi constitute the major portion of Karachi's population. Needless to mention that all the channels show Altaf's speeches and statements at the gun point.

  9. Dude AQ,

You listening to Bon Jovi and enjoying "Blaze of Glory", "I'll be there for you" or "Livin on a Prayer" was a bit difficult to comprehend as I read Taliban in Buner cut half the hair and half of moustache of three / four young men listening to music in car.

What's you views on all this?

  10. Oh hey ANJAN, how's it going?

ANJAN: That's sharia law. That's what those people were asking for. You will hear about incidents like that quite a lot now. Get used to it.

The taliban of swat first destroyed more than 200 schools, then they destroyed public and government properties. They destroyed hotels and God knows what else. They did all this just for sharia law. So we were like "wow man, those people really love sharia". So we signed the peace-agreement or nizam-adl or whatever it was. People there are quite happy now. :)

  11. @ Anjan Guptay: I don't know if Taliban will ever takeover Pakistan OR they are interested in taking it over. However, Kashmiri Mujahedeen will certainly increase their influence in India with their friends who study in Darul-Uloom-Deoband India and in other branches of Deoband's semenaries. Muslim groups of Assam which consist of young Muslims fighters will definitely out whole india on fire Insha Allah. I have my full support to all such groups and I wish to see India breaking in at lease, 7 countries like, Eastern Pujab as independent Sikh country named as "Khalistan", an independent country for Christians named as "Nagaland", an independent country for Dalits named as "Dalistan", an independent country for Muslims of Assam named as "Muslimabad", and three countries for Naxals, Tamils and Tripuris. I hope you have plans to cope with these groups but I don't see india serviving with these groups and we will soon see India breaking in various independent countries. Insha-Allah. It is the responsibility of every Muslim specially Pakistanis to volunteer themselves to fight against Hindu India and we will Insha-Allah break India.

    Regards,

    Muhammad Amir.
